Most People Don’t Realize An Underground River Flows Right Through Georgia

The Etowah River in Georgia features a unique underground section that adventurous kayakers can explore.

There are rivers that run underground all over the world, flowing freely without us ever even knowing they exist in the first place. Sounds pretty crazy to think that there is a rushing river flowing right under your feet without you even knowing! But just because we don't see them, doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't there. In fact, there is one particular underground river in Georgia that may just be one of the state's best kept secrets. And if you are brave enough, you can totally paddle your way through.

The Etowah River in Georgia runs quite a ways and cuts through some of the most beautiful parts of the state.

There are whitewater rapids, chutes, and even waterfalls that people kayak through when the conditions allow.

However, there is one unique feature along the Etowah River, 3.5 miles below Castleberry Bridge, that is a hidden gem for the outdoor adventurers of the state.

The Etowah River disappears into a 1/4-mile long, abandoned mining tunnel, creating the coolest underground river ever.

The rule of thumb is, before tackling this underground river, you must make sure you see the light at the end of the tunnel—even if it is just a little spec.

The mining tunnel was actually dug in the 1800s in order to divert the water so miners could retrieve gold from the river bottom.

Once you find it, you can enjoy the ride straight through to the other side.

Thanks to YouTuber creationgraphics, we have a look at what kayaking through the underground river is actually like.
