The Breathtaking Small-Town State Park in Georgia That We Can’t Stop Thinking About

Fort Gaines, GA is a small town with nearly 1,000 residents, but it's home to George T. Bagby State Park, a wonderful small-town park with plenty to entertain.

If there's one thing we have in spades here in Georgia, it's our natural beauty. From our northern mountains to our southern shores, there's endless opportunity for outdoor adventures here, and much of it can be found in the Peach State's multitude of state parks. One region of the state that's sadly underrated is our southwest corner. Home to a great many small farm towns and a few large cities like Albany and Valdosta, you'll find a lot of serene landscapes here. One great place to check out is Fort Gaines, GA. Tucked away in quiet Clay County, this town has a population of around 1,100 people and a rich history. It's also home to the beautiful George T. Bagby State Park, a wonderful destination for those seeking outdoor fun.

I have lived in North Georgia for more than a decade and I love it here - the mountain air and great views are wonderful. However, there's also something to be said for South Georgia's scenery. You don't get views like this all over the state - it's such a unique landscape!

George T. Bagby State Park spans 700 acres along Walter F. George Lake. You'll find an easy nature trail, plus an 18-hole golf course and conference center. If you get here and decide you just can't leave immediately, there are wonderful cottages available for a few nights' stay.

The trails here are considered pretty easy. This region of the state isn't exactly known for its peaks and valleys, and there's not too much elevation gain. The gentle grade and paved surface make this an accessible park that strollers and wheelchair users can enjoy, and it's also great for those visiting with bikes.

If you're visiting in the warm months, you'll love the swimming beach at the lake. This beautiful park has something for visitors at any time of year, however, and it definitely doesn't get the love it deserves.
