There’s A Park Hiding On The Very Edge Of Georgia And It’s Such A Peaceful Escape
Silver Lake Wildlife Management Area in Decatur County, Georgia, offers a secluded natural retreat with activities like hunting, fishing, hiking, and geocaching.
Here at Only In Georgia, we love featuring popular spots: after all, they're popular for a reason! We've got so many incredible state parks in Georgia that attract thousands of visitors a year, and they are each special and worthy of a visit. However, there are also loads of hidden gems in the Peach State, places that might not be at the top of most travel lists, but are just as deserving of attention. These spots have the added benefit of typically being pretty quiet, making them a wonderful option for escaping the noise and chaos that everyday life can throw at you. One of our favorite secluded spots in nature is tucked away in Decatur County, not far from the border with Florida. It's there that you'll find Silver Lake Wildlife Management Area. This is a hunting preserve that also offers other activities.
Note that a Lands Pass, Hunting License, or Fishing License is required to access Silver Lake WMA in Decatur County, GA. You can obtain annual passes or daily passes from the Georgia DNR website.
This is an absolutely magnificent area, and if you're looking to spend an afternoon by the water, it's definitely the place for you.
The 9,200-acre property has several lakes and ponds, including a catch-and-release pond plus several traditional fishing ponds where you can take your catch home.
The primary purpose of the preserve is hunting and fishing, but there are also several trails here for both hiking and equestrian usage.
It's also a great spot for geocaching!
Southwest Georgia is such an underrated corner of the state - when it comes to the state's southern half, much of the attention tends to focus on Savannah and the coast. The scenery in the southwest is just as beautiful, though!
Whether you are an avid hunter or just looking to explore some quiet trails, Silver Lake Wildlife Management Area is a great spot for peace and self-reflection.
