It probably goes without saying based on the length alone, but this is a backcountry hike and beginners should most definitely not attempt to trek the entire trail. Of course, you can always opt for a shorter portion of the trail and just take an out-and-back route.
The Georgia Loop follows some of the most beautiful areas of the state. You'll follow along several well-known trails, including the Appalachian Trail.
The entire thru-hike requires about 32 hours of hiking time, so obviously you'll need to set up shelter for an overnight stay. Most experienced hikers take about 4-5 days to travel the trail.
There are plenty of side trails if you'd like to explore the area a bit further, but some areas of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest can get a bit remote. Always make sure you stay on marked trails and that someone knows where you are hiking!
The elevation gain is 14,000 feet and the steepest section of the trail is the rugged Duncan Ridge area.
The joy of getting to see the views from the mountaintops makes the knee pain worth it, though!
If you're looking for great views, it's best to not go in the spring or summertime, since the foliage may block some of the overlooks.
The entire trail is too difficult for the majority of people to ever attempt, but exploring a small section of it is definitely doable for most hikers!
