The Georgia Cave Tour In Pettyjohn Cave Belongs On Your Bucket List

Pettyjohn Cave in Georgia offers a safe and exciting caving experience for beginners with unique features like waterfalls and rock formations.

You don’t have to be a professional spelunker to be able to explore some of the more fascinating caves in Georgia. In fact, in most cases, all you need is some safety know-how, at least one other person, and some courage to adventure down into the depths of the earth. Pettyjohn Cave in Georgia, for instance, has been touted as one of the best cave tours for inexperienced cavers, and it also happens to be the third-largest in the state! Be prepared to climb, crawl, and get a little dirty with this one-of-a-kind cave tour.

Located in Walker County, Georgia, Pettyjohn Cave (also known as Pettyjohn's Cave) has been dubbed as one of the best options for beginner cavers.

You’ll find some pretty spectacular features throughout this cave, from the waterfalls to the unique rock formations.

What makes this cave tour great is that it’s relatively safe and easy to traverse, which is why it’s great for beginners to train on.

However, you do want to be prepared and be informed before you visit - you do NOT want to explore this cave on your own without proper safety training.

In fact, there is a caving group in Atlanta known as Dogwood City Grotto that can be a great group to explore Pettyjohn with! They'll help you navigate the challenges, and utilize their vast experience to help you through any tricky situations.

As long as you’re with a group with an experienced professional, plus have all the right safety gear, Pettyjohn Cave will be quite the experience.

A few of the aspects of the cave worth keeping an eye out for include the Worm Tube which is a 200-foot tight passageway, or the Echo Room, the largest room in the cave.

Prepare to get muddy, too, as this cave can be quite moist and you’ll likely end up being very dirty by the end of it. We also don't recommend it for anyone with any level of claustrophobia!

Visiting Pettyjohn Cave is free to the public, but make sure before you go you check out the weather predictions in the area as well as any hunting season restrictions.

Note: It is important to remember that caving can be extremely dangerous, even for professionals. Never go caving alone, and always make sure to have the proper gear and safety precautions before entering the cave.
