This Hiking Trail Is the Best Way to Experience a Full Moon in Georgia
Watch the full moon rise over the canyon rim at Tallulah Gorge State Park for an unforgettable nighttime adventure.
There's something so captivating about a full moon. The way it illuminates the sky and can cast a midnight shadow never gets old. It's rare that I'm inspired to go hiking late in the evening—let alone after sunrset—but there's one trail in Georgia that's tailor-made for a full moon hike. Tallulah Gorge State Park, famous for its stunning canyons, offers guided full moon night hikes. Watching the moon rise above the iconic gorge is an experience you won't soon forget.
Canyons aren't often associated with the southeastern landscape, but Georgia is home to one of the most stunning in the region. Tallulah Gorge spans two miles and plummets nearly 1,000 feet, creating a dramatic and unforgettable vista. It's a beautiful hike any time of the year, and any hour of the day—and that includes nighttime, too!
Anyone interested in watching the full moon ascend over the canyon can opt for a guided Full Moon Hike, coordinated by the state park and led by experienced park rangers. You'll need to register in advance for this fun nighttime adventure, and on the selected date, meet at the park's Interpretive Center. You'll follow a well-marked trail, but it isn't necessarily easy; you'll hike 300 steps to the suspension bridge, which is a destination in and of itself. This bridge offers striking views of the Tallulah River and Hurricane Falls, spans 200 feet, and is 80 feet above the ground. At night, your visibility will be somewhat limited, but this only makes the sound of the rushing water below all the more dramatic. The entire adventure will take approximately one and a half hours.
There are few words to describe the beauty of the full moon rising over the canyon, but needless to say, it's a bucket-list-worthy experience, especially for outdoor and night sky enthusiasts. Rather than drive home after, you might consider booking a campsite (you'll want to do this in advance!) so that you can continue your park adventures in the morning.
As for gear, it's a good idea to bring water and sturdy hiking boots. The path will be somewhat illuminated from the full moon; however, you'll want to take a flashlight with you for added visibility.
The Full Moon Hike costs $10 per person, in addition to the $5 parking fee. For more information on Full Moon Hikes, be sure to visit the official Georgia State Parks website. These hikes are offered each month at various times.
