The best place to see cherry blossoms in Georgia is Macon, the largest city in Middle Georgia. The city has been officially designated as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World. Macon hosts the annual International Cherry Blossom Festival each year, and there's no other place like it around. If you're looking for cherry blossoms in Georgia, you won't want to stop anywhere else. This year's event is scheduled for March 15-24, 2024, and it's sure to be a pink party you'll never forget!
Here's why this unassuming city is the perfect place to enjoy nature in Georgia:
Located about 85 miles from Atlanta, Macon isn’t an internationally-known destination. However, it’s hiding a beautiful and fragrant secret.
Each spring, the cherry trees lining the streets and parks of Macon burst into bloom, and the result is absolutely enchanting, with a huge festival to match.
Macon has over 350,000 cherry trees. That’s more than 90 times as many as Washington D.C.!
Despite being famous for its blooms, the United States capital only has about 3,700 to 3,800 cherry trees.
When springtime rolls around, the air in this town is filled with delicate pink and white petals.
Macon’s blooming reputation got its start in 1949, when local realtor William A. Fickling Sr. noticed an odd pink tree growing in his backyard.
After learning that it was a Yoshino cherry tree, he learned to cultivate the trees and taught his community how to plant and care for them.
Soon, the entire city was blooming.
You can even purchase your own Yoshino Cherry Tree in Macon.
Best of all, the Fickling Family Foundation continues to donate thousands of cherry trees to Macon residents each year.
The trees grow 10-15 feet in just a few years. That means that in another few decades, Macon could have twice as many stunning blossoms to admire!
When do cherry blossoms bloom in Georgia? The blossoms will be in full swing soon in Macon.
