The Epic 4-Mile Trail in Georgia Is Worth the Climb
One of Georgia's best mountain views awaits, but you'll have to climb to it first. Rest assured, though, this 4-mile trek is worth every step!
Rocky trails, a sharp ascent, and an unrelenting incline are three ways to describe the Mount Yonah Trail, a 4.3-mile trek tucked away within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. But that doesn't tell the whole story. It's also considered one of the single best overlook trails in the state, and those who brave the climb are rewarded with unforgettable mountain views.
Yonah Mountain is no hidden gem; it's perhaps one of Georgia's best-loved hiking trails. But it's a bit intimidating too. Over the course of the two miles to the top, hikers will climb a staggering 1,500 feet in elevation. Of course, as hiking enthusiasts well know, with great effort comes great reward, and the view from the top is absolutely worth it.
Your hiking journey starts at the trailhead, where you'll notice a sign encouraging you to check for military training dates before beginning your hike. This is helpful, but it also underscores that the hike ahead is a serious one—worthy of training the U.S. Army. (For the most part, training exercises are done off the mountain, so it's unlikely that you'll cause interference.)
The hike is also steeped in history. The Cherokee named the mountain "Yonah," meaning "bear," and archeological evidence suggests tribes were present here as early as 1350, likely long before. Walking through the woods, you'll appreciate the well-maintained, easy-to-follow trail. But stay alert as you climb; hikers have noted exposed roots, loose rocks, and large boulders, and even a few snakes wandering across the trail.
The trail gets trickier and more technical towards the top, but keep going—you're almost there! From the overlook, you'll be able to admire a panoramic view of Northern Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains, including Blood Mountain. It's a great spot to pause, take a deep breath, and enjoy the view from one of the state's highest peaks.
Going down isn't easy, but it will be a welcome change of pace. Hikers have noted that hiking poles come in handy, especially when supporting them during the downhill trek. All in all, the trail takes most hikers about three hours to complete, allowing for breaks along the way and time spent at the summit. You'll want to get back to the trailhead before dark. It's also probably best to avoid this hike on a rainy day, as conditions can become dangerously slick.
So, what do you think? Would you climb this epic mountain overlook? If so, share this article with a fellow hiker and let the planning begin! Know before you go: This trail can get very crowded, especially on the weekends. If possible, aim to arrive before 10:00 a.m. to avoid the busiest part of the day. After you've finished your climb, be sure to check out Yonah Mountain Vineyards, one of Georgia's most stunning wineries.
