The National Battlefield Park in Georgia Where You Can See Hundreds of Bird Species in a Single Afternoon
Explore the birdwatching paradise of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Georgia, home to diverse species and breathtaking views, all in a single afternoon.
I just love places that have multiple attributes drawing visitors to them. A hike through the woods is great, but throw in a historical setting and you've got quite the special outing! That's exactly what you'll find at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Kennesaw, Georgia. This beautiful mountain was the site of one of the Civil War's bloodiest battles. Today, it serves as an educational site, a place for outdoor recreation, a popular ghost-hunting locale, and an amazing destination for bird watchers. Over 200 species of birds have been seen here, and even if you're not an avian expert, just hitting the trails to see what sort of critters you can spot is a fun afternoon activity that anyone can enjoy.
There are several trails to explore here, ranging from easy few-mile jaunts through the forest to lengthier, more difficult treks that will take a few hours.
There's a lot to see here, from the natural beauty of the flora to the multitude of animals that call this place home. Its location at the southern end of the Appalachian Mountain range and protection from urban sprawl makes it a haven for birds in particular, and 208 species have been spotted here. The lovely scarlet Northern cardinal is a common sight, and the tiny Carolina wren thrives here as well. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might even spot a mighty red-tailed hawk!
Despite its abundance of natural beauty, the mountain has a tragic history. This was the site of the 1864 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, where 5,350 soldiers perished. Those interested in Civil War history will find plenty here, including recreations of battle cannons, plaques, and an extremely informative visitor center.
Whether you're here to learn about history, check out the bird-watching opportunities, or simply enjoy a bit of time in nature just outside of the seemingly never-ending urban sprawl of Atlanta, this is one of the best parks in Georgia and it shouldn't be missed.
