Seeing This Florida National Park After Dark Is Better Than Daytime

Protected from light pollution, this unique park is one of the best places in Florida for stargazing.

The first time I saw Everglades National Park at night, I was moved almost to the point of tears. Critters whispered all around me, creating a harmonious symphony. Above me, the Milky Way struck a long line in the starry sky. Somewhere nearby, an animal splashed in the water — alligator or bird? There was no way to know, but hearing it made me feel like I was part of this mysterious, ancient wilderness. This unforgettable experience convinced me that the Everglades might be even more wondrous after the sun sets.

What Makes the Everglades So Magical After Dark

There are many fun things to do in Everglades National Park during the day, like going on a famous airboat ride, hiking uncrowded trails, and bike riding along gator-filled roads. All of these activities are wonderful. Yet this unique ecosystem endemic to Florida is just as enticing during the nighttime.

Most visitors leave with the daylight, so those who stay behind can enjoy the quiet peacefulness of the Everglades. In the stillness of the dark, you connect more profoundly to this natural space, whose central feature is a slow moving river of grass. The park also offers incredible stargazing opportunities thanks to its limited light pollution. Clear nights display star-studded skies, and the majestic Milky Way band usually makes an appearance during the monthly new moon. It's almost impossible to not feel absolute awe at the amount of glistening stars shining above you.

Tips for Visiting the Everglades After Dark

The best way to see the Everglades after dark is to spend the night. Camping in the wilderness is an adventure that I highly recommend, especially if you want to complete challenging multi-day hikes. Not into camping? Book a stay at Flamingo Lodge, the only hotel within the national park. That said, it's not necessary to stay overnight. Both the main entrance and the Gulf Coast entrance are always open, so you can simply come in and leave at any time. Some companies offer night airboat tours for people who want to see nocturnal critters. The National Park Service offers ranger-led night activities as well. These often include guided walks, and stargazing events.

No matter what you decide to do, make sure to dress appropriately. Wear light long-sleeved shirts and long pants to avoid mosquitos and scratches. Bringing a flashlight with a red filter is also important. It'll allow you to walk safely without stressing out wildlife, or ruining the views of the night sky for other visitors.

Best Times for a Night Visit to the Everglades

Florida natives know better than to venture into the Everglades at night during the summer. Not only are the heat and humidity almost unbearable, but dusk also brings swarms of mosquitoes, so save yourself a lot of pain and plan to visit from November to April instead. In fact, most guided after-sunset events happen during this time. There is even an Everglades Dark Sky Festival celebrated during the entire month of February!

Whether you come for a couple of hours or a couple of nights, you’ll be enchanted by the deep, moving beauty of the dark side of Everglades National Park.
