Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park is located near Gainesville and has been attracting visitors since the 1880s.
This National Natural Landmark is a true marvel, with a giant winding wooden staircase that brings visitors down to the sinkhole below.
The name “Devil’s Millhopper” comes from the shape of the sinkhole below, which is the same funnel-esque shape that you would find at the bottom of a farm grain hopper.
Because the bottom of the 500-foot-wide hole was discovered with dead animals rather than farm grain, it was dubbed the “Devil’s” hole.
The staircase, which was rebuilt in 2019, features 132 steps that are quite steep so make sure to hold on to the handrails.
While meandering along the wooden staircase, guests will be immersed in an unexpected rainforest surrounded, by lush ferns and vibrant plants.
Just remember, this is a protected area so make sure you leave it exactly as you found it.
Enjoy a descent down into nature as you wind the wooden staircase at Devil’s Millhopper in Florida.
