One of My Favorite Places to Hike Is Also One of the Highest Points in South Florida
Vista View Park is a hidden gem in Davie, Florida, worth exploring. This man-made hilltop is one of the highest points in South Florida!
It all started when I was toying with joining a local running club in Florida. I've always been an avid runner, but life took hold over the past few years, and finding the time has been more difficult than I expected. But, I did like the idea of joining a community running club to hold myself accountable.
That is how I discovered one of the highest points in South Florida, Vista View Park in Davie.

Anyone from Florida or who has visited knows that mountains and hills are few and far between. While we've been blessed with world-renowned beaches and the vast wilderness of the Everglades, we definitely lack elevation. However, there are a few spots to consider that will give you a great workout, but also some of the best views in Florida.
I've already written about Celery Fields in Sarasota, Florida, which is still one of my favorite places. But Vista View Park might just be a top contender. Now, don't expect gargantuan mountains that can rival our neighbor to the north. At 65 feet above sea level, this park's hilltop is the highest manmade elevation in Broward County. Spanning 272 acres, the park stands out for its rare rolling hills, which were created from a repurposed landfill.

I paid a fee to enter, which was only a dollar. Can't beat those prices, right? Even better, the fee is waived if you visit during the week. I happened to visit on a Saturday and, luckily, had four quarters rolling around in my glove compartment.
The first thing I did was find the Hill Trail - a winding pathway challenging walkers, runners, and cyclists, but one with the most rewarding views. It was a hot day, so I had with me a water bottle filled to the brim and cooled with ice. A little bit of respite from the Florida heat can go a long way. Especially because this trail does not have much shade in the beginning.
The elevation shift isn't immediate. It's gradual as you walk along the worn-out pathway up and around the hill. I would suggest comfortable shoes, preferably sneakers, here because it isn't paved. The trail is predominantly hard-packed dirt and some mulch.

Making my way to the top was a great workout. The fresh air was helpful, and I watched so many birds flying in circles overhead, catching the thermals. At the summit, I stopped to take in the view. Offering a panoramic sweep of South Florida's suburban sprawl, I could see pockets of shimmering lakes and patches of wetlands in different directions. There was something so incredibly enjoyable and unfamiliar about being at such a natural elevation in Florida that made the entire trek worth it at that moment.

As I made my way down the other side of the hill, the descent was easier on my legs, and I let myself enjoy the effortless glide. The trail curved around a small lake where ducks paddled lazily, leaving ripples in the still water. I also caught quite a few iguanas scurrying past ahead on the trail to find safety in the branches of the trees.

It wasn't a vigorous workout by any means, but that's mainly because I slowed down to appreciate and take it all in. This refreshing retreat is more than just a park—it’s a testament to how thoughtful design can transform an ordinary space into something truly special.
