There are tons of history lessons just waiting to be had in Florida, no matter where you visit. Our state is so rich with history within the United States that it's hard to visit without learning something new. Even beautiful parks that are tucked away in small towns have intriguing history behind them, that perhaps you wouldn't necessarily expect when visiting. Like this one park for instance, which while both peaceful and serene, holds a significant place in the history of our state.

Welcome to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park—Florida’s southernmost state park.

Today, one might venture down to this state park to set up a blanket and take in the beautiful turquoise colored water.

While a recreational-spot for many, this state park has an incredibly fascinating history that is worth being explored.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park was once a United States military outpost, built in the 1800s in order to defend our country’s southeastern coastline.

The military outpost was completed in 1866, and played very important roles in both the Civil War and Spanish-American War.

Being in such a prime location with nearly 360-degree views of any oncoming ships, Fort Zachary helped keep watch over any enemy combatants making their way up the coast.

To this day, visitors can take a tour of Fort Zachary and learn all about the history behind this great fortress.

See the massive canons peaking out toward oncoming ships…

…or walk the paved pathways of the grounds, passing through the green surrounding moat.

Not only will you be able to see a glimpse into the past for what Florida did to maintain its territory…

…but you’ll also be able to enjoy a little bit or paradise as well.
