Developed in 1899 and recently designated as one of the "Great Public Spaces in America," Washington Park in south central Denver is a little slice of heaven where locals and visitors can relax, recreate, and recharge. Paddle around the lakes, saunter through the gardens, or escape the summer swelter under a sprawling shade tree at this 160-acre mile-long Mile High urban oasis. Wash Park is undoubtedly one of the most popular and picturesque parks in Denver and is the perfect spot for a summer getaway right here in the middle of the city.
One of the most fabulous features of Wash Park is that it boasts two of Denver's largest flower gardens, both of which were established in the early 1900s.
The Mount Vernon Garden near Grasmere Lake is a splendid recreation of George and Martha Washington's garden at their Mount Vernon home in Virginia.
The park's massive Perennial Garden off Downing Street is the largest flower garden in the city and contains over 50 beds and 15,000 varieties of flowers.
The gardens provide the perfect setting for picnics, photographs, leisurely walks, and even weddings.
And don't forget your hat and sunscreen because most of the gardens are sun-drenched well into the evening.
Wash Park is also home to a Lily Pond and two large lakes with paths that loop around them and numerous benches, shade trees, and picnic sites along the way for your endless enjoyment.
Located at the boathouse at Smith Lake, Wheel Fun Rentals has a wide selection of specialty cycles, which allow you to cruise and explore the park in style and even have room aboard for the whole family.
You can also rent a pedal boat, canoe, kayak, or paddle board and float freely around the lake solo or with friends and family.
There are miles of trails for walking, jogging...
...and biking.
And the park's paths are suitable for even the tiniest of tikes and trikes!
Just keep an eye out for the MANY Mile High geese who call Wash Park their home.
If you remain alert, you just may find some words of wisdom hiding along the walkways.
Did I mention there are 10 tennis courts, 3 volleyball courts, 2 playgrounds, a horseshoe pit, and lawn bowling? All true!
Now this is my idea of a playground!
Next time you want to venture out for a sunrise or sunset stroll, don't stick to your same old neighborhood haunts. Ramble on over to Wash Park and see what all the fuss is about!
Want to know one of my other favorite parks...and one where your dog can actually legally swim!? This lesser-known open space and nature preserve is pure bliss!
