7 Things Delawareans Miss When The Boardwalk Closes Up

This is it, Delaware. We've been lucky enough to have a beautiful and warm fall so far, and trips down to the beaches have been easy when it's 80 degrees in October. But this weekend it all comes crashing down, with colder temperatures here to stay. While it's fun to visit the beach in the winter, sure, it's just not the same without all of the shops on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk open. So take a trip with me and reflect on this past summer and the end of the boardwalk junk food season — until next year! Here are a few things that we'll really miss about snacking on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk.

1. Fighting off a seagull for your slice of Grotto Pizza.

Sure, Grotto might not be the best pizza in the state, but there's something really authentic about grabbing a slice and then diving away from the birds.

2. Thrashers Fries — with vinegar.

Why people still ask for ketchup at Thrashers puzzles me. Vinegar or nothing!

3. Trying to eat your cone from Kohr Brothers before it melts.

There's nothing that cools you off quicker on a hot summer day. The frozen custard from Korhs seems to melt faster than any other ice cream I've tried. Eat quickly, or end up with ice cream dripping down your arm.

4. Dolles Salt Water Taffy sticking to everything.

Nobody makes hand-rolled salt water taffy quite like Dolles. It's so fresh that it sticks to everything!

5. The best fried chicken in the world from Gus and Gus Place.

Gus and Gus have been making the best burgers and fried chicken on the boardwalk for generations, and it's not changing any time soon. Still, when they close for the season, it feels like years before they open back up!

6. Getting addicted to Fisher's Popcorn.

Admit it — you have a problem. Every year, when you try your first few pieces of Fisher's, you think you'll be fine. And then a few weeks later you're driving three hours down to the beaches and sitting in traffic because you need just one more bucket.

7. The Candy Kitchen sugar high.

Candy Kitchen's homemade fudge is the best around — and their vintage candies and handmade chocolates mean you aren't getting out of here without enough sugar to power a Kindergarten classroom for a year. Enjoy it — there's no other candy store like this.

Not every place in Rehoboth changes their hours or shutters their storefronts during the winter. In fact, most of Rehoboth Beach is open year round. It's still worth it to plan a trip down to try the most unique restaurant in Delaware — Blue Moon!
