Pull on a pair of cozy wool socks, bundle up, and stroll through the woods on the best cold-weather hike in Morris, Connecticut.

Snow transforms Connecticut into an enchanting winter wonderland, which usually means one of two things. We either stay comfy at home, watch the snow tumble outside, or bundle up for an adventure to put the first footprints in that pristine blanket on a brisk hike. Next time you’re looking for a beautiful cold-weather hike in Connecticut, slip on cozy wool socks, and follow the Herron Pond Loop Trail.

Earmark around 40 minutes for your journey along the Herron Pond Loop Trail, a 1.7-mile hike in Morris, Connecticut, picture-perfect in all four seasons. Even though it’s open year-round, the easy path tends to be quiet, especially during the winter, so you might have it all to yourself. If you don’t feel like hiking, opt for snowshoes. Snowshoeing is also popular on the trail.

Sturdy shoes are strongly recommended due to the rocky terrain and exposed tree roots in some spots. Be prepared for a slight elevation gain of around 144 feet and, if you’re hiking when it’s snowy and icy, consider bringing poles to make your trek easier. Bring the kiddos along, too, and pups are allowed on this (leashed) dog-friendly trail. Some visitors allow their pooches off-leash, so keep that in mind before setting off.

Most who have hiked the Herron Pond Loop Trail liken it to a walk in the woods. Keep an eye out for those exposed roots and icy spots as you journey along the pretty path, over fairy-tale footbridges, and past (perhaps frozen) ponds. A wooden boardwalk meanders past the pond, and at one point along the trail, you’ll be treated to spectacular aerial views of the water. While you may not cross paths with any wildlife, you might see paw prints in the snow.

Try to time your visit, so there’s at least a light dusting on the ground, just for a sampling of that winter magic. But, don’t stop with a wintertime stroll along the Herron Pond Loop Trail. Come back when the spring wildflowers begin to bloom and the towering trees help shade the trail from the hot summer sun. One of the most beautiful scenes on the trail, the aerial view of the pond, takes enchantment to a whole new level when painted in fall colors.
