We Love Our National Parks, but This Connecticut Park Is Just as Spectacular
Witness a towering 60-foot waterfall, caves, and enchanting footbridges as you create your adventure at this state park in Connecticut.
Did you know that almost four million visitors flock to Acadia National Park each year? And rightfully so, because who wouldn’t want to be the first to see the sunrise in the US from Cadillac Mountain? Or soak up the views from the pristine coastline and watch the crashing waves at Thunder Hole? Surely, Arcadia is worth the six-hour drive from Connecticut, but I would argue that Devil's Hopyard State Park in East Haddam deserves a trip, too. As one of my favorite state parks in Connecticut, let me explain why I believe it’s just as spectacular as the national parks in the region.
You can find Devil's Hopyard State Park in southeastern Connecticut along the Eightmile River, a designated National Scenic and Wild River. Due to its proximity to Hartford and New Haven (less than an hour of driving time), the park is a wonderful destination for a day trip.
At only 1,000 acres, Devil's Hopyard State Park is 50 times smaller than Arcadia National Park. But what it lacks in size, the rustic playground makes up for in natural beauty and adventure. Unlike larger and more expansive parks, you’ll feel more connected to nature as you meander through the trails here.
The wow factor is Chapman Falls, a breathtaking 60-foot cascade that gushes over the tiered rocks in the warmer months and transforms into an icy wonderland in winter. Formed from the Eightmile River carving out the ancient bedrock, the gem is one of the prettiest waterfalls in Connecticut. A short half-mile hike leads to the stunning natural wonder, which can be viewed from above and below. If you visit during the slower season, you may even have the waterfall all to yourself.
More interestingly, the folklore about the waterfall adds to its appeal. Early settlers believed the Devil himself lived near the cascade and left pothole-like indents in some of the rocks. Visitors have reported seeing floating orbs around the falls and have heard devilish laughter throughout the park. While these claims can’t be confirmed, perhaps you’re brave enough to investigate them and let us know.
As you hike through the trails at Devil’s Hopyard, you’ll cross various types of bridges that add to the whimsical charm of the park. Plus, there are smaller waterfalls, shimmering streams, and caverns for you to see. The two-mile Vista Trail and Devil's Oven Loop lead to expansive mountain views, waterfalls, and a cave aptly named the Devil’s Oven. You won’t run out of hidden gems inside the park, and you’ll want to have your camera ready to capture all of them.
Bring your mountain bike, ride through tree canopies, and create your own adventure along the two-mile Devil's Hopyard: White and Orange Blaze Short Loop. Also, pack your fishing rod and spend a peaceful afternoon casting a line along the serene Eightmile River.
Yes, you could only spend one day at the park—but what fun is that? I’d suggest you book a camping spot and extend your time here. The campsites are located near Chapman Falls, so be on the lookout in case the devil stops by for a visit.
Devil’s Hopyard is wonderful to explore, no matter the time of year, but each season has its own magic. The park comes alive in fall when the trees burst with shades of autumn. After a good snowfall, expect the trails to be dripping with winter beauty. Summer and spring mean the waterfalls will be flowing, and pretty little wildflowers will line the trails. You can’t go wrong with a trip to this spectacular state park in Connecticut.
While we love Arcadia and all our national parks, Devil's Hopyard State Park deserves a spot on your bucket list, too. Not only is the park surrounded by immense beauty, but you’ll enjoy its rustic charm and the intimate experience (without the crowds) that you might not get at the more popular destinations.
Do you agree that Devil’s Hopyard is a bucket-list-worthy adventure? What is your favorite state park in Connecticut? Sound off on our nomination page.
