When you're looking to cool down on a hot summer day, there's no better place to head than Connecticut's shoreline. With miles and miles of beaches, everyone has their favorite spot to spread out a towel and take a plunge. But if you're looking for a slice of sandy shore that is the perfect family beach, you'll want to check out this secluded cove. For small fry and big fish alike, Hole In The Wall Beach might just become your new favorite swimming spot.
The sheltered cove of the Niantic Bay is home to Hole In The Wall Beach. While not as popular as many Connecticut beaches, this little lagoon has a whole bunch to offer.
To get to this lesser-known beach, you'll walk through a short tunnel under the railway line. To kids, the tunnel looks like a hole in the wall, giving way to the beach of the same name.
The tunnel takes you onto the Niantic Bay Boardwalk. Turn to the left and this mile-long waterside walkway leads to Niantic Bay Beach.
But turn to the right and you'll catch sight of a sandy secluded cove sandwiched between a rock jetty and the grassy McCook's Point. This is Hole In The Wall Beach.
The gentle slope into the water and calm waters make this beach ideal for families. The secluded cove is a slice of shoreline designed for a relaxed beach day.
Small kids can splash around safely where the surf meets the sand. While those more confident in the water can head out where it's deeper for a refreshing swim.
The soft sand is easy on the feet and perfect for constructing castles. And as with other Connecticut beaches, you'll discover a few seagulls lingering around.
Hole In The Wall Beach may be small but what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty and fun. Add this beach to your summer bucket list when it comes time to beat the heat.
Hole In The Wall Beach is open daily from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. Day use passes can be purchased at the entrance. Address: 4 Baptist Lane, Niantic, CT 06357.
