Take a Meandering Loop Trail to a Connecticut Overlook That’s Got Some Incredible Views
West Rock Ridge State Park is home to the beautiful Sanford Feeder Trails, which features some of the best views in the area!
We may lack the sprawling mountain ranges of the western United States, but one thing's for sure: there are plenty of amazing trails here in Connecticut. From quick and easy jaunts at your local municipal park to lengthy all-day treks that require strength and fortitude, there's no shortage of hikes to enjoy in the Nutmeg State. If you're looking for expansive views, we think you'll love the spot we're featuring today. West Rock Ridge State Park spans nearly 1,700 acres in New Haven, Hamden, and Woodridge. The park is perhaps best known as the home of Judges Cave, which served as a colonial-era hiding place for judges fleeing from the wrath of King Charles II. However, it's also the site of some remarkable trails that are definitely worthy of exploration. One of our favorite hikes here is the Sanford Feeder, Regicides, and Red Blazes Trail, a moderately difficult loop that shows off some of the state's best scenery.
All together, the route spans about 5.5 miles. It takes around two and a half hours to explore the entire path, and there is quite a bit of elevation gain, but the views make it worth all of the effort.
You'll definitely want to head out on a clear day - you can see for miles if conditions are right, and the city skyline looks like a little diorama from so far up.
The trails are well-maintained, with clear blazing and not much overgrowth, but note that some of the rocks can become slippery when loose. Always make sure to wear appropriate footwear and watch your step, especially if you're visiting after heavy rains.
This trail is quite the workout and perfect for anyone looking to burn a few calories while enjoying nature.
Quite a few trails cross through this system, so always make sure you pay attention to trail maps and signage.
This is a pretty quiet area - many hikers report not spotting anyone else along the trail. That makes it great for being alone with your thoughts.
The trail is open year-round, and, if anything, you can enjoy even better views in the winter when the trees are not blocked by leaves. Dogs are allowed, just make sure they remain on-leash throughout your hike.
