We've shared plenty of easy hikes in Connecticut for those looking for a quick outing. But if you're a more adventurous soul, you'll want a longer expedition full of exploration. The trail to Indian Council Caves takes you through the Tunxis State Forest to an extraordinary place. Dust off those hiking boots, this is one adventure you won't want to miss!
The Tunxis State Forest is one of Connecticut's natural treasures. It spans 9,152 acres on both sides of the Barkhamsted Reservoir in the towns of Hartland, Barkhamsted, and Granby. With such a large area, this woodland is a hiker's paradise.
Today's featured hike within this huge natural area is the Indian Council Caves Trail. The 4.9-mile out-and-back trail leads to gigantic rock formations deep in the forest.
You'll hike through a hardwood forest with a gradual elevation gain of 882 feet. You might want some company on your journey. Bring a friend or even your pup if you wish.
The scenery is beautiful along the way. The lush canopy and fern forests are a vibrant green this time of year.
Reach the Indian Council Caves and you'll be impressed by the towering boulders. There aren't really any caves here but rather huge crevices created by the spaces in between the rocks.
Kids and adults alike will love exploring the site. Check out all the nooks and crannies that create the "caves."
When we say these rocks are large, we mean gigantic!
You'll feel like you've entered an ancient wonderland at Indian Council Caves. Who's ready for a little adventure?
Find the parking area for the trail near the Barkhamsted Reservoir on Route 219 just west of the intersection with Hillcrest Drive. For a trail map, visit All Trails.
