The Can’t-Miss Connecticut Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
Cross several unique bridges and pass wildflowers and mushrooms on your way to a quartz mine on this can't-miss nature hike in Washington Depot.
Connecticut is simply beautiful, and there’s no better way to immerse ourselves in some of its natural beauty than on a hike. While I love hiking, I tend to look for short, sweet, and relatively easy trails as I work my way up to more challenging adventures. This can’t-miss nature trail in Connecticut promises something, from slight challenges to breathtaking natural scenery, for everyone. You might want to add it if it’s not on your bucket list yet.
Next time you feel like spending the day outdoors, visit Hidden Valley Preserve, a tranquil 940-acre nature preserve in Washington Depot. Around 20 miles of trails meander through the nature preserve with each offering beautiful forest and meadow landscapes, and some of the most awe-inspiring views in Connecticut. If it’s your first visit, start your adventure on the Van Sinderen Loop Trail.
The 3.4-mile trail earns a moderate rating, but the challenges are common ones and are easy to overcome with sturdy shoes and attention. Be prepared for slippery conditions, including mud and fallen leaves. Acorns scattered on the ground are common along the Van Sinderen Loop Trail, so keep an eye out for them, too.
Get ready for a bit of a workout as you pick up the trailhead right at the preserve’s parking lot. Several inclines might be challenging, but all of those obstacles are worth it for the beauty – and even a surprise – that awaits along the trail. The trail is well-marked. Try to keep track of the markers so you stay on the path. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in the scenery that you inadvertently wander off the trail.
As you hike, you’ll cross over several unique bridges, including one that leads to a quartz mine. (A sign on a tree will let you know you’re going the right way.) Be prepared to climb stairs on the bridge to the mine. This is one you’ll need a camera for to snap photos of rock formations, streams, pretty wildflowers, and an abundance of mushrooms.
Before setting off, make sure you have insect repellant and check yourself, and your pup if he comes along, for ticks, which are prevalent in the area. You may find that cell service, depending on your carrier, is spotty or even non-existent. Let someone know where you’ll be just in case of an emergency.
