This haunted hike is not part of an attraction. The Pachaug State Forest was once inhabited by a small community, and some proof of that is still visible. But the last of the old stone foundations are being swallowed by the land, and all that's left is mostly stories. Follow one of the most haunted trails in Connecticut to see if you experience anything otherworldly.
The Pachaug State Forest is the largest in the state.
It attracts hunters, hikers, and bikers, too. But over the years, people have told stories of hearing a woman screaming that seems to come from all directions. Paranormal believers attribute it to the spirit of a Native American woman who was murdered by a group of Englishmen.
Hell Hollow Road runs through the forest, and is said to be one of the most haunted streets in the state.
The story of a young witch named Maude has been around for years, although according to history Maude was just a newborn when she passed. Some attribute the rumor to the fact that Maude was mysteriously buried away from the rest of her family. Some claim to have actually seen a ghostly figure standing in the grass.
The forest is also a burial ground.
When the land was purchased during the depression, it came with the remnants of colonial life, including grave sites. Many were unmarked and few were relocated. So you share this forest with any number of skeletons. If you come across any lilac bushes, don't touch them. They're said to be guarded by the ghost of Mrs. Gorton.
The boy who haunts Hell Hollow Pond was one of her victims.
Legend has it that a young boy stole one and later disappeared while out fishing. Many believe Mrs. Gorton drowned him. Being young and long haired, it may be this young boy who appears by the road, and not Maude. But either way, this place is creepy!
