The Challenging 8.8-Mile Appalachian Trail Hike in Connecticut Worth the Climb
The hike to St. Johns Ledges may be the most challenging in Connecticut—and one of the most rewarding.
Connecticut is one of the Northeast's smaller states, with a lot of the area being devoted to its cities and its beautiful shoreline. This is why it's always a bit of a surprise when I'm reminded of just how beautiful the forest there is! Not only do we have plenty of Connecticut hiking trails and parks to explore here, but Connecticut is also home to 52 miles of the Appalachian Trail. For those who think that's a lot, remember the iconic trail is almost 2,200 miles long in full! The good news is, you don't have to hike all of the Connecticut portion to get a taste of adventure.
In the charming town of Kent, Connecticut, you can get access to a beautiful 8.8-mile trail that leads to one of the best views in the state. But just because it's a day hike doesn't mean it's not an adventure—some have called it the most challenging hike in Connecticut.
The St. Johns Ledges to Glacier Rock hike on the Appalachian Trail is an all-day adventure, and you'll encounter some challenging terrain along the way, but the rewards at the end are well worth the journey. We're sure many people who witnessed its beauty have been inspired to take a much larger hiking journey.
Most people in Connecticut have never seen most of the Appalachian Trail—even most of their own section. But for those who want to experience a taste of it, bring your best hiking boots. This is a challenge and an adventure fit for those who have some experience hiking and aren't afraid to break a sweat for some amazing views.
This area of the trail is located in the Pond Mountain Natural Area. While this trail is fairly popular and well-maintained, you can expect plenty of rocky areas. You might want to bring some rock-climbing gear if you're worried about maintaining stability on the steeper portions—the trail has an elevation of 2,509 feet.
However, the rocks aren't just the challenge; they're also part of the reward. This hike features some amazing rock formations along the way, both mighty fixed rocks and fallen boulders. Definitely take some time to catch your breath and enjoy the view.
The view is why you're here, after all! St. John's Ledges are only about half a mile into the walk, but this trail offers plenty of viewpoints along the way, both of the larger trail and of the surrounding countryside and the town of Kent. It's especially stunning during the fall, when the entire countryside is covered in colors.
