Most Connecticut Residents Have Never Heard Of This Fascinating Museum And Iron Furnace

After all, it's a particularly small state, so it might seem like there aren't man hidden gems in Connecticut to find. However, if you keep your eyes peeled, you're sure to see something new in the Nutmeg State. Today, we're featuring a great museum in Kent, CT that it's likely you've never heard of. The Eric Sloane Museum in Kent, CT is a fascinating spot just north of the village of Kent. It makes for a wonderful day trip, and there's plenty more to do in Kent if you'd like to turn it into a weekend getaway.

If you're not familiar with Eric Sloane, he was a landscape painter who also wrote several books about American folklore and culture. He passed away in 1980, but made his mark in the art world.

The state-run museum that shares his name is located on the property that was once his private studio. It's also home to the historic Kent Iron Furnace.

The furnace stands about 32 feet in height and was used to process iron beginning in 1826. It closed in 1892 and the area surrounding it was actually used as the town dump up until the time Sloane's studio was constructed.

The museum has a recreation of Sloane's studio with many authentic pieces.

You can also check out Sloane's large collection of antique carpentry tools. These date all the way back to the colonial era.

The museum also contains exhibits that are focused on the land's history of iron-producing.
