Beat the Winter Blues with a Trip to This Connecticut Trail
Falling snow transforms the Mount Tom Tower Trail, an enchanting winter hike in Connecticut, into a wonderland with breathtaking views.
Connecticut might be a small state packed with towns and cities, but its natural scene is one of the most beautiful I've ever experienced. The Nutmeg State's parks and forests are jam-packed with stunning landscapes, and some of them, like Mount Tom State Park, are truly iconic. The park is home to the Mount Tom Tower Trail, which leads to a stone fire tower with one of the best views in Connecticut.
Odds are you've hiked it before but probably not under a blanket of snow. The short and sweet loop trail and the fire tower are fully accessible in winter, and when the snow is covering nearby Litchfield, it's one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots in the Northeast. You've likely never experienced a winter hike in Connecticut like this, so come along and discover why this journey is the perfect way to beat the winter blues.
The Mount Tom Tower Trail is only 1.3 miles, but it's a slightly rugged trail that's perfect for winter. With a 337-foot elevation gain, it can be challenging for rookie hikers, and the main trail goes off the beaten path. Wear good hiking boots and prepare for an adventure.
This is a historic area, so you will see fascinating preserved remnants, including chimney ruins, from Connecticut's past. As you reach the end of the trail, the ascent gets steeper and somewhat rocky. Dogs are welcome as long as they're on a leash.
The challenges are worth it to get to your final destination - Mount Tom Tower. At 34 feet, the stone fire tower isn't the tallest in the Northeast, but its strategic location and rustic charm make it one of our favorite spots to get a bird's eye view of the region.
There are fantastic views from all around the summit, but the fire tower provides a view of the Litchfield Hills that's unlike anything else around. Finding the trail again from the summit can be a bit tricky, so mark your location or bring a navigation app like AllTrails+.
Have you explored Mount Tom State Park in winter? If not, tell a friend and embark on this winter hike in Connecticut together. See more year-round photos of the trail on the AllTrails trail listing, and check out the Mount Tom State Park website for more details on current hours and amenities.
Although this moderate hike is fairly straightforward, we recommend AllTrails + for winter hiking, as the app's point-by-point directions and downloadable trail maps can be invaluable when the trail is obscured by snow. You'll probably work up an appetite on this hike, so drop by Patty's Restaurant for old-fashioned country cooking when you're done.
