Colorado’s Most Underrated National Forest You Need to Visit

Escape the crowds and find peace as you explore this lesser-known national forest in Colorado. Grand Mesa National Forest is jam-packed with adventure!

Have you ever had a national forest all to yourself? As a nature lover, that sounds like a dream come true. Sure, it’s nice to see the jaw-dropping Maroon Bells inside the White River National Forest or explore the glorious peaks of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. But let’s face it, these destinations are extremely popular and can be a little crowded. And sometimes, skipping the crowds brings us more peace.

If you want to beat the crowds and explore arguably the most underrated national forest in Colorado, head to Grand Mesa National Forest near Grand Junction. With dense evergreens, serene lakes, and home to the largest flat-topped mountain, the spectacular scenery here is worth the trek. Known as part of the GMUG forests system, the Grand Mesa National Forest spans approximately 350,000 acres in western Colorado. With stunning natural landscapes as far as the eye can see, it’s a place you need to witness for yourself. As one of the lesser-known national forests in the state, this picturesque destination is great for hikers who prefer to explore in solitude.

With a mix of easy, family-friendly hikes as well as difficult treks that require more effort, this forest has a trail for all adventurers. No matter when you visit or what kind of outdoor explorer you are, I promise that you’ll find something to love about the Grand Mesa.

If it’s not the 300 lakes that dot the landscapes, it will be the sweeping panoramic mountain views that will leave you speechless. Best of all, you might have the forest all to yourself, regardless of the season you visit. In the winter, bring your skis or snowmobile and take in the views of the snow-covered mountains on the 5-mile-long Vista Ridge, Summit, Sunset, and Winslow Loop. Unfortunately, this moderately challenging route might not be suitable for beginners or for kids. The good news is, it will be a lot of adventure for the avid cross-country skier, and chances are, you’ll have the slopes to yourself.

The Crag Crest National Recreation Trail is the most popular trail inside the forest, and you’ll likely see other explorers here. But plan your hike during the spring or early summer to admire the meadows of vibrant wildflowers—it’s worth it.

Leaf peepers, plan your trip during the peak of the fall season to witness the trees changing colors across the landscape. The scenic Mesa Lakes Trail comes alive in the autumn and is a great backdrop for nature photography. This 3-mile loop trail is kid and dog-friendly, so feel free to bring them along.

My favorite kind of hike is one with scenic overlooks. Nothing brings me more peace than sitting and admiring a breathtaking view. The Land of Lakes Overlook Loop offers that and more. This mostly paved trail is perhaps the easiest hike inside the forest, but it has incredible rewards. Expect views of lakes, dense pine trees, and expansive mountain views as far as you can see. Make sure you have your camera ready; trust me, you’ll need it here.

Besides hiking, you can explore the forest by mountain bike, horseback, ATV, and by car, cruising on the 63-mile Grand Mesa Scenic Byway. Boaters, anglers, kayakers, swimmers, and water enthusiasts make the lakes your own personal playground. No matter what kind of adventure you seek, this underrated state forest in Colorado has something for everyone to enjoy. Plus, you might just have the gorgeous destination to yourself!
