The Little-Known Hiking Path inside the Pike National Forest in Colorado is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year

Are you an outdoor adventurer who prefers to skip the crowds on your hikes? If you are, don’t feel bad because you’re not alone. Most of us look forward to exploring the great outdoors without having to interact with others. Little-known hiking paths in Colorado are few and far between. After all, Colorado is one of the top states for hiking in the country. Luckily for us, I found a lesser-known trail inside the Pike National Forest, where if you plan your trek at the right time, you might not see a soul. Let’s bundle up and kick off the year with our first hike on the Upper Cheesman Canyon Trail in Sedalia, CO. 

Nestled inside the scenic Pike National Forest, the Upper Cheesman Canyon Trail is the best way to jumpstart your year. On every step of this 4-mile out-and-back trail, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque views. From mountain ranges to alpine lakes to scenic woodlands to serene meadows, and more, this trail will not disappoint. 

Located off Wigwam Creek Road, the trailhead is easy to find, and you should have no issues with parking. The trail is well-marked and should be easy to follow, but it’s a good idea to have AllTrails+ downloaded in case you miss your step. 

As you hike the terrain, expect rocky conditions and there are some extremely steep areas along the way. With an elevation gain of over 1,000 feet, the trail is moderately challenging, but the rewards are worth it. If you’re hiking during the colder season, the path might be slippery due to snow. So, be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and trekking poles will come in handy too. 

During the peak season from March through October, the area is known for fishing and hiking. You might see other hikers especially along the river, but if you visit during the off-season, chances are, this little slice of heaven will be all yours. Leave the kids at home for this trek, but dogs are welcome as long as they remain on the leash. And keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife that includes deer, elk, and mountain lions.

Aside from the picturesque snowcapped mountains, some of the highlights of the trail include striking views of the Cheesman Reservoir and dam, as well as views of the South Platte River. Since the trail ends at the river, it’s a peaceful spot to reflect while listening to the sound of the flowing water. It wouldn’t hurt to pack a snack and spend some time here basking in the beauty of the crystal-clear waters before you head back to your car.
