The Can’t-Miss Colorado Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Featuring picturesque landscapes, waterfalls, lots of wildlife, and more, Mirror Lake and Crater Lake is one of the best nature lover hikes in Colorado.

It’s no secret that Colorado is a massive playground for outdoor enthusiasts. As a self-proclaimed nature lover, I literally can’t think of a better place to explore the great outdoors. There are so many bucket list worthy trails here, including the Sky Pond and Lake of Glass Trail in the Rocky Mountain National Park. However, there is another trail in Granby, Colorado that you’ll absolutely love too. It has everything that will rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. No matter when you visit, the Mirror Lake and Crater Lake via Cascade Creek Trail features picturesque landscapes, waterfalls, lots of wildlife, and more, making it one of the best nature lover hikes in Colorado. Be sure to download AllTrails+ and grab your boots before you leave for this can’t-miss trek. They’ll come in handy!

Tucked inside the Indian Peak Wilderness, you will find Mirror Lake and Crater Lake Trail. Located off Waterton Vly in Grandy, you can access the trail using the Monarch Lake Trailhead.

This 14.0-mile out-and-back trail is considered a challenging hike, but it’s also one of the most scenic spots in the wilderness area. It features all the best scenery that Colorado has to offer. Aside from the pretty alpine lakes, there are two things that I love the most about this trail: first, it doesn’t get too crowded and second, there are several waterfalls along the way.

Beginning at Monarch Lake, the stunning views of the lake and mountains as you trek will capture your soul. Eventually, you’ll meander through the forest, where you will encounter several waterfalls. One of the prettiest is Cascade Falls. I suggest that you take some time to admire all the waterfalls that you’ll find. Keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife that’s plentiful in the area. If you’re lucky, you could see black bears, deer, and plenty of moose. Just be careful and keep your distance from the animals.

Walking through the aspen forest and listening to the sounds of nature is guaranteed to inspire the nature lover in you. As you trek, you will cross large boulders, flowing creeks, footbridges, and more. The trail will be rocky and steep in some areas, so be sure to wear good hiking boots. Eventually, you’ll get to the breathtaking Mirror Lake and the hike ends at Crater Lake, where you can bask in panoramic views of the cliffs, glaciers, Lone Eagle Peak, and more.

The best time to visit is June through November, but this hike is great all year long. In the winter, Mirror Lake turns into a pretty winter wonderland. You might need trekking poles and snowshoes if you plan to hike in the snow.

During the warmer months, expect pretty wildflowers as you hike. Of course, the forest comes alive in the fall with brilliant autumn hues. No matter the time of year, this picturesque trail will rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul and it belongs on your bucket list

If you’re an avid hiker, you can complete this trail in a day, but it’s best to plan for an overnight adventure. There are several other trails in the area, so you can explore them as well. Between the alpine lakes, mountain views, aspen forest, pretty waterfalls, and more, there is no doubt that you will enjoy this nature lover hike in Colorado.
