It seems that more and more Cincinnatians are heading downtown these days to try out new restaurants, award-winning musicals, and trendy art galleries. Over the past couple of years, you can also add parks to that list as everyone in Cincinnati has fallen in love with Smale Riverfront Park. If you ask anyone where to take out-of-town visitors, their first answer is almost always this picturesque park along the river.
Even though it was not that long ago, it's hard to remember when the now-beautiful park space downtown was basically empty. We heard the plans and saw the construction happening, but it wasn't until Smale Riverfront Park officially opened its first phase in 2012 that we knew the impact it would have on our city.
This multilevel riverfront park is now one of the most popular gathering places in the city, and for good reason. There is something for everyone with beautiful gardens, walking paths by the river, relaxing swings, and innovative play spaces.
In the summer, the multiple splash fountains are favorites of kids and adults alike. Smale makes it easy to bring the kids down to the park with multiple restrooms, shady spots and activities.
There are various sections throughout the park that lend themselves naturally to play and creativity. They are big enough that grown-ups can join in on the fun and there's enough variety that you can spend hours here and still find something new to try.
One of the main features of the park is the stunning Carol Ann's Carousel. Each figure brings Cincinnati to life and the vibrant colors and nostalgic feel make for a fun downtown destination.
The park hosts several events throughout the year that meet everyone's interests. From Family Fun Days to yoga, these activities couldn't be held in a more beautiful setting.
Smale Riverfront Park is the space Cincinnati needed. It has brought the riverfront back to life and allows easy access to the other features of downtown such as The Banks, both stadiums, Sawyer Point, and with a short walk, even the Cincinnati Bell Connector. It comes alive at night as well, so be sure you visit then, too. If you have yet to visit Smale Riverfront Park, be sure you do so soon so you can fall in love with this Cincinnati treasure along with the rest of us.
