Chicago is known as the "city in a garden," and the hidden Lurie Garden is a symbolic representation that celebrates Chicago as a green, sustainable city, though it was once all marshland.
Built over parking garages and a commuter railroad, it is part of the one of the world's largest green roofs, in combination with Millennium Park.
In this secret garden, you'll find plants that are native to North America, including many native to Illinois. They are chosen based on their ability to withstand a four season environment.
The garden is also a safe shelter for butterflies, bees, and birds. Year round, these incredible creatures call this majestic oasis home.
The park and hidden garden are accessible via just about every train. As it is right in the heart of downtown, you can get to it from any section of the city. Its exact location is just south of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion.
Surrounding the garden are 15-foot-tall hedges that hide the intimate oasis from view. At night, the hedges capture the light and it creates a quiet, romantic atmosphere.
Other features include the West Hedge, which tells of a Greek legend involving Apollo. There's also the Light Plate and Dark Plate separated by the Seam, a gorgeous walkway great for strolling and reflecting.
Fitting in with the rest of the artistic creations in Millennium Park, this garden is a living piece of art. It combines texture and color for a sensory experience like no other.
