Although generally considered a rarity, rooftop green spaces are becoming increasingly popular in urban settings. Places like New York City, Boston, and Houston have all added some form of a rooftop green space or garden where city dwellers can go to relax. But did you know that Northern California is home to perhaps one of the most unique "floating" parks in the country? After years of planning and construction, Salesforce Park in San Francisco opened to the public in 2018. This rooftop park in San Francisco has since become a popular spot in The City for exercising, playing, or simply enjoying the idyllic setting. Take a look:
Salesforce Park is a public rooftop park that appears to float in the sky between the buildings of the San Francisco skyline. Visiting the 5.4-acre rooftop green space is one of the most fun things to do in San Francisco. Visitors can relax for a beat in a stunning urban setting.
The park sits on the rooftop of the Salesforce Transit Center which serves as a bus terminal and potentially a future rail terminal. The "living roof" is like an oasis in the middle of the city, complete with a curved walking trail, grassy lawns, and lots of trees and plant life.
In fact, the park is home to a variety of delicate plants and habitats that comprise 13 separate areas. Each area represents a unique ecosystem, like the Australian Garden, Bamboo Grove, Redwood Forest, and the Prehistoric Garden.
Be sure to check out the Garden Guide which lists all of the species of plants that can be found in each ecosystem. Because each garden contains such a special variety of plants, pets are not allowed at Salesforce Park with the exception of service dogs.
The park was designed for the enjoyment and benefit of all, especially families. The children's play area, complete with a climbing rope-style jungle gym, is definitely kid-approved.
The park runs along the entire length of the Transit Center - nearly four city blocks! There's truly no other place like it. Whether you spend your time exploring the walking trail, enjoying a picnic on the Amphitheater Lawn, or watching the Bus Fountain's choreographed geysers, your time at this rooftop park will be time well-spent.
It's not very often you get to explore a floating park in the middle of a large city! Visit the Salesforce Transit Center's website to learn more about Salesforce Park and what this rooftop green space has to offer.
