Swim at This Iconic Hidden Swimming Hole in Northern California for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun
The remote Potem Falls swimming hole near Mount Shasta is the perfect way too cool off during Northern California's scalding summers, while still avoiding crowds of tourists.
With its abundant forests and mountains, Northern California differs from the southern part of the state in many ways but is perhaps most different when it comes to easy access to water. No, not seawater or drinking water, but lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. Locals know just how lucky they are to swim and frolic in these waters (especially in the summer when the California heat looms large), but even locals sometimes can miss out on hidden gems like the Potem Falls swimming hole near Mount Shasta.
The Shasta Lake Recreational Area is popular year-round for a reason, with a plethora of hikes to choose from, options for skiing and snowboarding during the winter, and a prominent lake that allows all manner of water sports. The answer to this popularity and the inevitable frustrations that can come with it? Go remote! Located close to Highway 299, Potem Falls isn't exactly what avid hikers and nature fanatics would even call 'remote,' but it's far enough away from the crowds to ensure that you can obtain a parking place and are less likely to silently curse others for walking too slowly or being in your way (fast walkers, we're looking at you).
This hidden gem is a 70-foot waterfall that collects in an unusually deep pool and is surrounded by pine, fir, and oak trees tall enough to wrap the swimming hole in a near-constant shade. To gain access, you must hike the Potem Falls trail. This is a relatively short hike (0.6 miles) and isn't too challenging, save for a few eroded areas and the occasional slippery rock. Families with young children could certainly manage it, but its slightly steep nature means that it's not ADA-accessible.
An enchanting sight, the height of the falls means that the long plunge of the water creates an ever-present mist in the air — something that might be uncomfortable on a more frigid day in winter but can prove to be a valuable asset in the heat of California's summers. Although there isn't much beach space or areas to sit and lounge for large groups, there is a rope swing for those brave enough to test the cold waters caused by snowmelt runoff.
Due to the falls and trail's slightly more remote nature, the parking lot and trailhead are on a dirt road where there are no bathrooms or water fountains. Additionally, although the trail and swimming hole are dog-friendly (on a leash), ticks are common in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest so you need to be vigilant in checking both yourself and your pup after the trip. Luckily, even though rattlesnakes are also common in the area, the constant mist caused by the falls means that you're unlikely to encounter one on your adventure. Poison oak and skunks are, however, unfortunately not as perturbed by the moisture.
The main thing to remember (as every hiker and camper knows) is that you have to be very careful with the food you bring into the area. Black bears do roam here, and they're very aware that the area's popularity means that people will be bringing food with them. Keep in mind that leaving the food behind in the car isn't the solution either, as bears have an excellent sense of smell and will not think twice about breaking into your car. Overall, is it unlikely that you will encounter a bear? Yes, but it's not an impossibility, so do your due diligence.
