You don't have to be in top physical condition to explore and enjoy the scenery around Buffalo. There are plenty of things to do for all skill levels, and hiking is no exception! If you are looking for a great way to get some steps in and take in the fresh air in the great outdoors, here are eight incredible New York hikes under five miles that will put your pedometer to work. Come see why we feel like these are some of the downright best hikes in Buffalo:
1. Tifft Nature Preserve
Tifft Nature Preserve is a great spot to frequent if you're looking for a leisurely trek. Hike up and down steady sloped, grassy hills or head to the boardwalk to hike around the marshes. There are five miles of trails total in the preserve to explore!
2. Devil's Hole State Park
Devil's Hole State Park offers more advanced hiking trails as well as scenic nature trails, so you can choose your path depending on your abilities and desires of the day. There are three trails to choose from, ranging from two miles to 7.5, with one meeting right in the middle at 3.98. While you're there, be sure to check out the Devil's Hole Cave! In terms of the best hikes in Buffalo, this one is near the top of the list for a reason!
3. Chestnut Ridge
Chestnut Ridge is one of Western New York's most popular hikes under five miles, thanks largely in part to the "Eternal Flame." The hike back through Chestnut Ridge is moderately challenging, so be sure to bring the appropriate gear and come prepared for the elements, as the trails tend to get slippery in the rain. While the trail back to the Eternal Flame is only .5 miles each way, you can choose to extend your hike by trekking the Boy Scout Trail (an additional 2.3 miles) or Orienteering Trail (2.6 miles).
4. Genesee Nature Trail / Erie County Forest
The Erie County Forest is a nature preserve south of Buffalo in Sardinia, New York. Hikers have a few options for trails at this preserve: the Scarbuck Trail, the Scarbuck Extension Trail, and the Conservation Trail, all of which total roughly four miles of terrain. Stop and catch your breath on "The Bridge Too Far" and enjoy the serene atmosphere of this small town hike.
5. Reinstein Woods
The Reinstein Woods Loop is roughly three miles long and weaves its way through the Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Depew. Keep an eye out for wildlife and work your way down to the water for a peaceful afternoon hike!
6. Hunter's Creek
Hunter's Creek is another quick hike, located south of Buffalo in the town of Wales. The hike is only 1.9 miles, but the paths are moderately difficult. Waterfalls and, of course, a creek are the main focal points along this trail.
7. Knox Farm
Knox Farm is a popular spot for hikers, bikers, and walkers, with several trails ranging in length from a half-mile up to 3.1 miles. Whether you're looking to exert some energy or would rather take a leisurely stroll, you'll find everything you need at this quiet park in East Aurora.
8. Riverwalk
The Buffalo Riverwalk is newer to the Buffalo hiking scene and offers great views of Lake Erie from Downtown Buffalo to northern Erie County. Hike the trails, rollerblade, walk, jog, bike, head to the water for fishing, or take a seat for great bird watching along the shores of the lake!
