There’s No Other Park In The World Like This One In Austin

Austin is brimming with art. Every nook and cranny of this fine city bursts with splashes of color and creativity. From the utility poles on South First Street to the sweeping murals on the east side, you'll find quirky displays almost everywhere you look. Sparky Park, a tiny pocket-park located in the Hyde Park neighborhood, is no exception. There's no other park in the world like this one in Austin.

Much like Town Lake, Sparky Park began its life as an ugly eye-sore.

This tiny plot of land began its life as an electrical substation in 1930. After the substation was overhauled, the city installed new machines outside. Understandably, Austinites weren't too excited about this ugly display of metal and wires.

With the help of Austin's Art in Public Places, this unattractive piece of land turned into something whimsical.

This city-run program has been keeping Austin beautiful since 1985. From the airport to the convention center, Art in Public Places pieces can be found throughout the city.

Austin artist Berthold Haas crafted these stunning displays in 2008.

Haas took inspiration from a variety of sources. You can see elements from the psychedelic '60s, 1700s Germany, and 20th century Midwestern grottos.

These intricate walls were a community effort.

The surrounding neighbors also chipped into make Berthold Haas' creation come to life. If you look closely, you can see some of their names etched into the art.

Dozens of different materials come together to make a truly jaw-dropping work of art.

This installation is made of mirror balls, painted stucco, slag glass, broken dishes, and even old substation hardware.

Just like Town Lake, Sparky Park turned into a gorgeous and peaceful destination.

Sparky Park is a true hidden gem. Stroll through the shaded pocket park and enjoy the peaceful Mexican Plum trees and crape myrtles. Sparky Park is located at 3701 Grooms Street.
