If it’s a fine day in the counties of Desha and Phillips, Arkansas, and you’re in the mood for an easy hike, the place to be is the Delta Heritage Trail State Park. Even though it's still in early development, you can enjoy a wide range of activities, including hiking, biking, and fishing in the most gorgeous environment.
Picture this: An astounding scenic backdrop stretching 46.1 miles that boosts of forested corridors with limestone surfaces, waterways, wildlife, and diverse plants.
The rail-trail consists of eight trailheads at Lick Creek, Arkansas City, Rohwer, Watson, Elaine, Lake View, Barton, and Lexa.
If you opt for the Barton trailhead, which is north of the Delta Heritage Trail State Park visitor center, you’ll have access to several amenities.
This includes a gift shop, bike rentals, 24-hour half restrooms, standing grills, campsites with tent pads, and a community water spigot. If you happen to feel particularly adventurous, you can join The Pedal & Paddle tour and bike 24 miles from Barton to Lakeview and back.
On the other hand, the Arkansas City trailhead, which lies at the southern end of the trail offers an old train depot, now a multi-purpose building. It houses bathhouse facilities, an open pavilion, and offices.
The Arkansas trailhead offers various facilities, including a bicycle repair station, group-sized charcoal grill, picnic areas, restrooms, and a water fountain. There is also a limited camping facility with two oversized-tent pads for campers.
Currently, Arkansas State Parks is building the Delta Heritage Trail in phases. The finished portions span 23.8 miles from Watson to Arkansas City and 20.6 miles from Lexa to Elaine.
By 2025, the trail is set to cover 84.5 miles, eventually crossing the White and Arkansas rivers.
We love the Delta Heritage Trail for many reasons, but chiefly for its accessibility, making it the ideal location for all.
The Delta Heritage Trail operates on a first-come, first-served basis. So, make sure to contact the park to check their availability. If you had to go on the hike, which of the trailheads would you pick?
