With A Historic Fort, Museums, And Reenactments, This Arizona Park Is the Ultimate Family Destination

If you have children like I do, it can sometimes be a struggle to find a place we can all enjoy as a family. However, there are so many incredible family-friendly destinations around the state so it's not too hard to find a place we can all agree on. From waterparks to amusement parks, from zoos to outdoor adventures, we have it all! Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde is one such place that all can learn from and enjoy in Arizona.

Fort Verde State Historic Park first opened as a park in Camp Verde in 1970. Its purpose is to protect the historic sites here as well as teach visitors some important Arizona history.

To give a bit of background to the site that is now Fort Verde State Historic Park, it was once occupied by U.S. Army Troops beginning in 1870. Eventually, between 1871 and 1873, a fort was built. This fort was used as the army base for the duration of the Central Arizona Indian Wars.

The fort was eventually left to abandon and significant portions of the land were sold off. What remains today is 11 acres of land that includes part of the former parade grounds, four historic buildings, numerous artifacts, and ruins.

While this state historic site is small, it's a great place to get the entire family outside and learn about some important Arizona history. This site played a significant role in the state's development which included cultural conflict.

Upon your visit, not only can you walk around and view the historic structures but head into one of the house museums to view fascinating artifacts. These museums also contain furnishings from the 1880s.

You'll learn about what life was like for those living at the fort including families, doctors, and enlisted troops, among others. It's a peek into the past during the time of great conflict in Arizona.

If you're interested in seeing reenactments, living history programs are occasionally scheduled. It's a fascinating way to get a sense of what life was really like during the late 1800s.
