We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Funniest Hiking Trail Name in Arizona
The Munds Wagon, Cow Pies, and Hangover Trail is a hiking trail in Arizona with a strange name — and some of the best views in Sedona.
Munds Wagon, Cow Pies, and Hangover, oh my! What a name for a hiking trail in Arizona, am I right? This mouthful of a hike is located in the beautiful Coconino National Forest in Sedona, and it's so much more than just a funny name (although I wouldn't blame you if that's part of your motivation for hitting the trail). The 8.2-mile loop is challenging, but doable, with an elevation gain of just under 1,200 feet. It's well-marked, not overly crowded, and the views are outstanding. Add this trail to your next Sedona trip for a memorable adventure.
Since the trail is a mashup of three different names, its origin story is also threefold. "Munds Wagon" refers to the wagon route developed by local rancher Jim Munds in the late 1800s to transport cattle and goods from Sedona to Flagstaff. This trail was part of the route. "Cow Pies" is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Sedona's iconic red rock formations, which are round and flat like cow pies. Finally, "Hangover" describes the steep, narrow rock ledges along the trail that can cause hikers to feel like they're "hanging over" the edge of the cliffs (but some people see it as a joke that the trail is hard enough to make you feel hungover the next day).
It’s rare to find a trail with jaw-dropping scenery from start to finish, but there isn’t a dull moment on this hike. All around you and as far as the eye can see, Sedona’s signature red rocks command the landscape with their rugged beauty. The cliffs are blanketed with the lush greenery of the Coconino National Forest, creating a postcard-worthy visual contrast.
Many hikers have suggested going clockwise on the trail to avoid most of the technical climbing aspect. This is especially good advice if you plan on bringing your pooch (yes, the trail is dog-friendly!). You’ll still have to navigate some steep sections and sheer edges, but the challenge is invigorating (and rewarding — just wait until you see the views from the highest point). You'll even see a few secret caves carved into the cliffsides. So, yes, the Munds Wagon, Cow Pies, and Hangover Trail has a strange name, but it’s far from a gimmick. This hike is sure to earn a permanent spot on your favorites list.
