Why Visit Flagstaff in Winter?
There are only a handful of destinations where you can experience the true beauty of the winter season in Arizona. But by far, our favorite town to visit is Flagstaff, and rightfully so. After all, it’s one of the snowiest cities in the country, and the town is jam-packed with winter activities.
Flagstaff is a dreamy winter town that comes alive under a blanket of fresh powdery snow, with an average of 110 inches per year, to be exact. Whether you’re trekking through the winter wonderland hiking trails or zipping down the ski slopes, you’ll find plenty to do here. Not to mention, there are lots of local holiday events, great restaurants, and tons of family-friendly winter attractions, too. Plus, if you love snuggles inside a cozy cabin, you can do that here! Seriously, you can’t go wrong with a trip to this winter town in Arizona that looks like a snow globe this time of year.
Outdoor Fun, Dining, Lodging, and Events
If you love hitting the slopes, then Arizona Snowbowl is the place for you. This iconic ski resort is not only one of the “longest-running resorts in the West,” but it's also a favorite winter destination for locals and visitors alike. Nestled on the San Francisco Peaks (aka “The Peaks”), the resort is great for skiing, snowboarding, and more. With 777 acres, 61 runs, and three terrain parks, you can easily spend your day basking in the breathtaking views as you zip down the scenic mountain.
Never been skiing? Have no fear. Snowbowl offers lessons and has beginner's parks for folks just getting started on the slopes. Once you’ve mastered the techniques, you’ll have so much fun zipping down the mountain in this ultimate winter adventure. However, you can always indulge in some food and beverages at one of the lodges if you don't feel like skiing or snowboarding.
Pro Tip: Be sure to purchase your tickets in advance. Also, kids under 12 can ride and ski for free, so bring them along to enjoy this outdoor winter adventure.
After a day of skiing, you probably developed an appetite. Stop by one of the on-site restaurants at Snowbowl. Or head into town and delight in some of the most delicious Cajun BBQ from Satchmo's. This local joint has one of the best pulled pork sandwiches in the area so that you won’t be disappointed.
Once you’re done dining, we’ve got the perfect spot for you to rest. Only minutes from the ski resort is the Snow Bowl Log Ski Cabin, a top-rated vacation rental in Flagstaff, which can accommodate up to eight guests. And with 3,600 square feet on 3.5 acres, there's plenty of room for you and your crewm whether it's family or friends.
This six-bedroom retreat boasts stunning views of “The Peaks”, a massive game room, an outdoor fireplace, and a warm hot tub where you can soak your worries away. Perhaps enjoy a cocktail (or two) as you gaze up at the twinkling stars in the night sky. On colder evenings, snuggle up by the fireplace and roast marshmallows with your friends or family. Waking up to the most breathtaking views of the mountains will inspire you on your second day of skiing.
While you’re in town, be sure to check out the enchanting hiking trails, museums, and local restaurants and coffee shops. Also, if you visit during the holiday, don’t skip the annual Holiday of Lights Parade or the North Pole Experience at The Little America Hotel. The kids will love it, and adults will, too!
So, if you need a quick escape, pack your bags, and plan a trip to Flagstaff for a perfect winter weekend getaway in Arizona. From skiing to festive events, there are plenty of fun things to do in this cozy winter town.
