Dead Horse Ranch Is an Underrated Arizona State Park to Visit This Fall

Celebrate the fall with hiking, fall foliage, and a festival at Dead Horse Ranch State Park near Cottonwood.

Across the country, fall is a season of celebration as cooler temperatures arrive and the leaves start to turn. This is my favorite time of the year, and, living in Arizona, it's when I spend the most time outdoors. While I love taking day trips to small towns for the scenery and fall festivities, spending time at Arizona's state and city parks is another great way to celebrate the season. If you would like to see vibrant foliage while on a hike, I suggest visiting Dead Horse Ranch State Park, an underrated park in Arizona that looks quite impressive during the fall.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park, located near Cottonwood, is a uniquely named Arizona State Park. If this is your first time hearing its name, you're not alone—this is one of the state's most underrated, even though it has a wonderful mix of history and nature. While you can visit any time of year, fall is when this state park really shines.

With its riparian habitat due to the Verde River running through this 433-acre Arizona state park, deciduous riparian trees like cottonwoods, Arizona Ash, Arizona Sycamore, Netleaf Hackberry, and willow grow alongside the river's banks, and you'll get quite a colorful show when visiting in the fall. Dead Horse Ranch State Park becomes a picture-perfect location for leaf-peeping in Arizona as the leaves transition from green to warm gold and orange tones.

There are several ways to enjoy the fall foliage at Dead Horse Ranch. Hiking is an obvious choice to explore the park, and there are over 20 miles of hiking trails through forested areas, along the river, and around the park's lagoons. Biking and horseback riding are also allowed. Visit AllTrails to pick which trails work for you.

Another option is kayaking along the Verde River or fishing in one of the lagoons. Imagine viewing fall foliage from the water—what a peaceful experience! The park also has picnic areas with ramadas that you can reserve in advance. Camping is a popular activity here, with 100 tents and RV sites, and eight one-room cabins that provide more of a glamping experience. No matter how you decide to spend your time at the park this fall, know you'll have some of the best fall foliage views in Arizona.

One fall event you may be interested in attending at Dead Horse Ranch State Park is the Verde River Days. Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., marks the 36th year of this event. There will be free admission to the park, free activities, sandcastle building, fishing, canoe rides, food, and over 40 nonprofit nature vendors. This event is fun for the whole family! All are welcome.

If you haven't yet visited Dead Horse Ranch State Park in the fall, make this the year to go to see historic sites, the Verde River, and fall foliage. This underrated Arizona park has an entry fee: $10 per person, $20 per vehicle, and $5 per bicycle. You can also purchase an Arizona State Parks pass for entry all year.
