Love Bryce Canyon National Park? Try This Similar Spot in Arizona
Skip the crowds at Bryce Canyon and visit Chiricahua National Monument instead. The hoodoos at this hidden gem are otherworldly, too.
When it comes to national parks, I think Utah has the ultimate bragging rights. After all, it’s home to the “Big Five”: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Zion. Naturally, millions of visitors flock to our friendly northern neighbor yearly. And rightfully so, because the landscapes of these national treasures are out of this world.
But in my opinion, the hidden gems in Arizona are just as mesmerizing. One includes the Chiricahua National Monument in Willcox. The whimsical hoodoo formations and deep canyons at Chiricahua rival those inside the beloved Bryce Canyon. So, why not skip the crowds in Utah and visit this underrated monument in Arizona instead? The best part? Admission to this remote park in southeastern Arizona is free—you can't get a better deal than that!
Known as the “Wonderland of Rocks,” Chiricahua National Monument doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, especially compared to the mighty Bryce Canyon. But have no worries, I am here to change that!
Both parks share several similarities, including the hoodoo rock formations, scenic drives, miles of multi-use hiking trails, overlooks, and more. While Bryce Canyon boasts the largest and most striking collection of hoodoos in the world, the formations at Chiricahua are also a sight to behold.
For the best views of the otherworldly hoodoos, trek the 8.2-mile Big Loop Trail, which combines Echo Canyon, Upper Rhyolite Canyon, Heart of Rocks Loop, Big Balanced Rock, Inspiration Point, and Mushroom Rock. The trail is incredibly challenging, with rocky sections and steep inclines, so be sure to lace up your hiking boots and bring plenty of water for this adventure. Due to high summer temperatures, check for heat advisories before you go, or plan your trip for a cooler month.
Of course, you’ll notice a difference in the colors of the whimsical spires. That’s because the formations at Bryce Canyon were eroded from iron-rich limestones. At the same time, the structures from Chiricahua were derived from rhyolite tuff, a volcanic rock, resulting in muted, less vibrant hues. The formations at the parks may vary in size, color, and shape, but each offers something unique and inspiring.
Another similarity between the parks is that they feature scenic drives, meaning no hiking is needed to see the incredible landscapes. At 7.8 miles long, the Bonita Canyon Scenic Drive meanders through the heart of Chiricahua. This drive is great for wheelchair users and moms with strollers.
I love that there are picnic areas and breathtaking overlooks where you can pull off to marvel at the views. Unfortunately, the overlooks along the route might not be suitable for wheelchairs, but the family-friendly Massai Point Overlook is ADA-accessible and stroller- and kid-friendly. And the views of the rock gardens here are awe-inspiring.
Bryce Canyon has natural bridges, vast canyons, and historical sites throughout the park. But guess what? Chiricahua has those attractions as well. Here, you’ll find the Chiricahua Natural Bridge Trail, featuring a natural bridge that extends over a vast canyon. History buffs will be delighted to explore the Faraway Ranch Trail, the restored home of the Erickson family, a Swedish immigrant family who settled in the area.
Moreover, you can find a visitor center at Chiricahua, with opportunities for stargazing, horseback riding, birdwatching, picnicking, and camping. You can easily spend several days at this national treasure, exploring all that it has to offer. Most importantly, you’ll avoid the large crowds when visiting this hidden gem in Arizona.
So, if you can’t make it to Bryce Canyon, have no fear. Hop in your car and drive to Chiricahua. This underrated national monument in Arizona rivals some of the best national parks in our country and certainly belongs on your bucket list.
