Arizona is known for its gorgeous scenic drives, but sometimes those very same roads can seem a bit daunting. Twists, curves, two narrow lanes through canyons or mountains, dirt roads, and even dodgy environmental conditions can turn a leisurely drive into a stress-inducing experience. Some of them are the most dangerous drives in Arizona! However, these same roads are ones that not only test your driving ability but also turn out to be a truly fun ride. Here’s a look at a few of those roads:
1. Apache Trail (State Route 88)
This curvy road can be a bit of a daunting drive for even experienced drivers because of the curvy, narrow, sometimes-dirt road that follows the canyon between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Lake. It's one of the most epic road trips in Arizona if you dare, though!
2. Catalina Highway
The drive up the Catalinas is gorgeous, since you get to see the desert slowly turn into forest. But its curving roads are a bit unnerving, which is why sometimes you’ll get stuck behind someone driving 15 miles per hour up the mountain. The road might be one of the most scary places in Arizona thanks to the curves, but trust us when we say it's worth every stressful mile.
3. Coronado Trail (Route 191)
Another narrow, curvy road, Route 191 has an estimated 460 curves! All those twists can be exciting for drivers, but be careful of going too fast. Those hairpin curves can be tricky! Keep in mind that this road closes after heavy snowfall, so plan your trip in summer...if you dare. It's one of our favorite road trips in Arizona for sure, despite the stressfulness!
4. Interstate 10
Do you remember hearing that Interstate 10 in Arizona is one of the most dangerous roads in the country? It placed fourth in the category due to the high number of fatalities per 100 miles of road. When it comes to dangerous roads in Arizona, the I-10 is definitely among the top.
5. Sitgreaves Pass (Old Route 66)
This old road is not just narrow and incredibly curvy - it’s also not in the best condition, either. Take care when driving this section of Route 66! It might be one of the more scary places in Arizona, but the history alone is totally worth it!
6. State Route 77
This road runs down a good chunk of Arizona’s land, and you’ll get to see plenty of beautiful landscapes along the way. Some places on the road, especially through Salt River Canyon, may turn your idyllic, scenic drive into a white-knuckle experience. Hairpin curves and narrow lanes make this route a little scary, but you can eventually pull over at rest areas to enjoy the view. This is one of the most epic road trips in Arizona - so don't be too afraid to try it!
7. State Route 89A
Curvy and mountainous, this is actually quite a stunning drive! Some people may find the drive a bit unnerving especially when other drivers may be moving a bit too fast, but the views here make the trek worth it. This is not just one of the best road trips in Arizona - it's one of the best in the United States.
