The Stunning Top-Secret Natural Spring in Alaska Nobody’s Ever Heard Of

These unique island hot springs aren't just beautifully rustic and remote, they're also one-of-a-kind.

Beautifully and pristinely nestled in the Pacific's Ring of Fire, Alaska is a confluence of natural wonders if there ever was one. Imagine stepping into a world where the mountains meet the sea, where lush forests cradle steaming springs, and every breath you take is infused with the crisp, invigorating scent of Alaska's unique coastal wilderness. Welcome to Trocadero Soda Hot Springs near Craig, Alaska — a slice of heaven that invites you to soak, unwind, and embrace nature in its purest form.

The Last Frontier has quite a few ahh-worthy hot springs to its name, both rustic and developed, but Trocadero is a little extra special — although reaching this little-known hot spring poses a few additional unique challenges. But, fortunately for determined and mindful soakers, those challenges seem to keep the crowds at bay, leaving room for one of the best soaks in the state.

Tucked away amidst the towering trees and scenic, rugged coastal cliffs of Prince of Wales Island, Trocadero Soda Hot Springs is nothing short of enchanting. As you approach, the air is filled with the faint, tantalizing scent of fresh pine, beckoning you closer. The springs bubble with a unique captivating effervescence, a natural "soda-like" fizz that dances across the surface, inviting you to take a dip in the naturally carbonated waters. It's your own rustic jetted hot tub and it's oh-so magical.

The bubbling properties are caused by some pretty cool science-y stuff that has to do with air vents and underground thermal activity. It's above our pay grade, but it suits to say that nature is pretty awesome, especially here in Alaska. Similar activity has been found in only a few other places in the world, like New Zealand.

The moment you sink into the springs, you’ll feel your worries dissipate. With temperatures ranging from a blissful 98-105 degrees Fahrenheit, the water cradles you like a warm hug. Each soak rejuvenates your spirit while the mineral-rich waters work their magic, leaving you feeling refreshed and renewed in mind, body, and spirit. And with the gorgeous surroundings to keep you company, this one-of-a-kind hot spring is a treat for literally every sense.

But the biggest challenge to enjoying this bubbly, toasty soak is just getting there.

Reaching Trocadero Soda Hot Springs is an adventure in itself and is only reachable by boat about 12 miles southeast of Craig on Prince of Wales Island. Once you're on the right side of the island, a narrow trail guides you through a picturesque 1.5-mile hike. Waterproof rubber boots are a must. In fact, don't be too shy to break out the waders.

As you wind your way through this lush paradise, keep an eye out for wildlife — perhaps a deer peeking through the trees or a flock of seabirds gliding overhead. Each step brings you closer to the anticipation of relaxation.

The trail culminates in a breathtaking reveal. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the hot springs come into view, nestled like a precious gem in the Alaskan wilderness. The juxtaposition of vibrant turquoise and rainbow-hued waters against the deep greens of the pines is a sight that will take your breath away, especially when beautifully shrouded in the springs' warm, sauna-like steam. But perhaps even more special is the grand entrance to the bubbling waters themselves.

Trocadero Hot Springs cascades into an unnamed creek, scooping up minerals from its surroundings along the way. The constant run-off creates a shimmering layer of tufa as you get closer to the pool - a vibrant "red carpet" of gold silica and calcium carbonate deposits that leads straight down a set of natural stairs and into the water. From there, you can indulge in Mother Nature's royal spa treatment.

But one important note: this is true bear country (because this is Alaska, after all). This means that particularly during the salmon run season, you might not have this hot spring to yourself. Be sure to keep one eye open even as you kick back and soak.

Late spring through early fall offers the best weather, so plan your adventure accordingly. Layer up, gear up, and be respectful of this hidden gem! These hot springs are located in a major geothermal area, so you're likely to stumble upon a few other springs while you're here.

Trocadero Soda Hot Springs isn't your usual hot springs destination; it’s an unforgettable experience that calls you to unwind and reconnect with the beauty of Alaska in the dreamiest way. While a challenge to find and time-consuming to reach, hardy visitors will have a truly magical experience at this rarely-visited set of pools. If you happen to be traveling to Prince of Wales Island, perhaps for some aerial bear or whale watching, this scenic oasis awaits!
