It’s a quick, 40-minute drive from Anchorage, and a total gem to visit. It’s a tiny town surrounded by water and stunning mountain ranges.
There’s a beautiful hike that will take you up and above Prince William Sound and downtown Whittier.
The views are breathtaking, and the hike itself is maintained and easy to follow. There are steps built into the ground, and even boardwalk crossings at streams and muddy sections.
The hike only covers about 541 feet of elevation gain, so you won’t find it too difficult.
In fact, this hike is rated moderate, and is relatively easy until right at the end. You’ll find the steepest part right before you finish.
The trail is only two miles long, out and back.
It’s a shorter trail, so it won’t take up the whole day. Pack water and a snack, and grab a picnic lunch at the top when you stop to admire the view.
The path can get slippery and a little muddy after it rains, so be sure to pack good gear.
You’ll want sturdy, non-slip shoes, and be careful of your footing. Always dress in layers, just in case the weather changes.

The tunnel opens to car traffic every hour during the winter, and every half hour during the summer. But make sure you see when the last run is available, so you can get out before the tunnel closes for the day!
