If you’re looking for an adventure unlike any you’ve had before, you need to head to Wood-Tikchick State Park.
Located near Dillingham, this state park is the largest state park in all of America. It covers 1.6 million acres of Alaska wilderness.
The park holds almost half the entire state parkland in all of Alaska.
And it holds 15% of all the state park land in the United States. It’s a vast area that has mountains, 12 lakes, and rivers up to 60 miles in length.
The park is about the size of Delaware, and is filled with tons of Alaska wildlife.
The park is characterized by its two interconnected systems of fresh water. These clearwater lakes are home to abundant water based ecosystems.
You’ll find that it’s home to all five species of Pacific salmon.
That makes it an attractive area for bear, too. You’ll also see moose and caribou in the area.
It’s home to plenty of waterfowl, including gulls, sandpipers, bald eagle, golden eagle, arctic tern, and various loons.
This state park is just teeming with wildlife. That makes it an important area for subsistence fishing and hunting and gathering.
The best way to explore the area is to camp.
The park has plenty of places you can stay, but the area around Upper Tikchik Lakes does require a permit. They’re easy to get, and well worth it to explore this area close up.
