Adventure’s Calling: This Beach Is Ideal for Beachcombing in Alabama

From backcountry to beachcombing: this special Alabama state park is your go-to for quality time on the Gulf.

I don't happen to live near the coast, but I try to make it to the ocean at least once every year. There's something so grounding about the tides, the sand, and the rhythm of the waves. A walk on the beach is far from your typical nature walk; there's so much to take in, whether it's the vastness of the ocean or the tiny shells around your feet. The practice of beachcombing is almost meditative, and if you're looking to scout out some of the best shells and surf in the state, head to one of our all-time favorite spots: Gulf State Park.

It's no exaggeration to say there's something for everyone at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The 3.5 miles of white sandy beaches are just the beginning; there's also an interactive nature center, a fishing pier, a butterfly garden, backcountry biking trails, a swimming pool, lake access, and so much more. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail offers visitors a 12-mile loop, perfect for those looking to experience the landscape by bike or on foot. (Bikes are available for rent if you don't want to bring your own!) There's lots of wildlife to spot, and plenty of benches for resting when you need it. Visitors also mention a prevalence of flies, so some bug repellent may come in handy.

Most visitors are there for the beach, though, and it's no secret why. There are a handful of different access points to get you to the water, and each designated place has parking and restrooms available. There are also flags at each entrance that share safety information about water conditions, so be sure to act accordingly.

If you're looking to do some serious beachcombing while you're here, you'll want to head to the Shell Lot, located at 28273 Perdido Beach Blvd in Orange Beach. There's a small access fee, but you'll be rewarded with pristine sand and some of the best shelling opportunities in the area. Shell Beach is located east of the Perdido Pass Bridge and features stunning dunes and shells scattered along the water's edge. Visitors are welcome to take a few shells home, but please be respectful of the beach as a delicate ecosystem. One golden rule is to bring one bag for storing your treasures and another bag for picking up any trash you find.

If you want to stay for longer than a few hours, Gulf State Park offers overnight accommodations like outpost campsites and Eagle Cottages. Learn more about how you can reserve your spot on the official Gulf State Park website.
