While Alabama has its share of spectacular water parks full of manmade attractions like water slides and wave pools, there's something special when you find a water park built by Mother Nature. For one of our best, you must visit Devil's Den Falls in Cheaha State Park in Delta. This natural water park near Talladega, Alabama, is a spectacular place to cool off during our sweltering summer days. It's also a lovely sight to behold at other times of the year and a frequently photographed site along the Chinnabee Silent Trail.
To get there, head to Cheaha State Park (19644 Hwy. 281 in Delta). From there, you'll go west on Cheaha Road for about half a mile and continue onto State Route 281 for a mile, continuing straight onto Cheaha Road for another half mile. You'll turn left on Lake Chinnabee Road, which will lead to a hiking area within one mile. From there, you can make the short hike to the falls.
When you arrive, you'll immediately see how this place is a natural playground just like an organic water park.
Cascading waterfalls splash into refreshing pools below, creating several tiers of shallow water for splashing around.
The rock formations and gentle spray of water make four hours of fun for people of all ages. You can sunbathe on surrounding rocks, taking dips to cool off at your leisure.
What to bring? A swimsuit or other clothing suitable for swimming; sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection; towels for drying off (and a comfortable ride home); and non-slip swim shoes to protect your feet from the rocks and ensure steady footing. Absolutely bring snacks or pack a picnic – and be mindful to use trash receptacles or pack out your trash when you go. This is a popular spot and takes consideration by everyone to keep it clean and enjoyable.
If your pup likes to take the plunge as much as the rest of your family, dogs are allowed at Cheaha State Park and Devil's Den Falls. Be mindful of park rule, which require dogs stay on leashes, are socially adjusted, and have owners who clean up after them.
