The Walkable Alabama Town That’s Known for Its Extensive Network of Trails

Take a stroll away from the normal places like downtown and walk in a few different places in Homewood Alabama.

Homewood, Alabama, is known as one of the best cities in Alabama to live in. It is also known for its close proximity to many options for food, shopping, and entertainment, making it very walkable. But if you are anything like me, you try to find the less busy spots and think a little outside of the box. So when it comes to walkable areas in the city, sure, we can hop from building to building, but what if we were to take a stroll somewhere different? Here are a few places you can stretch out your legs that don’t necessarily involve tall buildings and concrete sidewalks.

Just outside of Homewood, at the southern end of Birmingham, you will find the Birmingham Botanical Garden. Botanical gardens are one of my favorite places to take a stroll. There is nothing like visiting a beautiful place filled with blooming flowers and inspiring art. The Birmingham Gardens is especially cool due to the wide variety of plant life and different gardens available to explore. Guests can sit by sparkling fountains, roam the rhododendrons, or check out the conservatory, where you can find both tropical plants and desert greenery.

I always love a good Japanese garden, and at the Birmingham Botanical Garden, you can walk the raised boardwalks amidst towering bamboo stalks. Seeing this much variety makes it feel like you have traveled the world while remaining with your feet firmly planted in Alabama.

Another great spot is the multi-use trail nearby, known as the Vulcan Trail. This four-mile flat trek will take you on an adventure just outside of the busyness of the city. There is plenty to see along the way, from the lush overgrowth in the summer to the golden fallen leaves in the fall. You will also get great views of the city along the way, so you will never feel like you are too far away for too long.

Next up is in the southern part of the city of Homewood with a trail called the Lakeshore Trail, also known as the Homewood Shades Creek Greenway. This is the longest of the pathways thus far, but it is a great spot in the city to escape into the beauty of nature. With miles and miles to go, you can either do a short section if you are short on time or tackle the whole thing. This is also an excellent place to take out a bike and go for a ride. A peaceful green space is much different than roaming the streets of downtown, but for those looking for a break, this trail can’t be beaten.

Not all cities in Alabama are created equal when it comes to walkability, and you are sure to find Homewood to be a walkable wonder. Not only can you dip in and out of storefronts, but you can also venture a little off the beaten path for some excellent walking trails. I find it very helpful to track the miles I put in on my AllTrails app, and I would recommend having that with you when you adventure out on these walking paths. So now you know it's time to get out there and get your steps in.
