6 Alabama Hikes That Shine at Sunset

From sandy beaches to mountaintop overlooks, these trails offer some of the best sunset views in Alabama.

When was the last time you intentionally sought out a good sunset view? It’s honestly one of the first things I do whenever I’m traveling. Of course, you don’t have to travel far to find a good sunset view in Alabama. Whether you want to pull up a patch of sand and enjoy a sunset on the beach or you’re donning your best hiking gear and ready to tackle a mountain trail, here are some of the best hikes with sunset views in Alabama.

1. Dauphin Island

  • Location: Dauphin Island, Alabama

There are a few different trails on Dauphin Island. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary Trail is only 1.6 miles long, but the Bicycle Trail and Beach Trail run for 14 and 15 miles, respectively. Regardless of which trail you take, be sure to bring enough water and maybe some snacks. Check out some of our favorite coastal hikes in Alabama for more inspiration.

2. Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve

  • Location: Birmingham, Alabama

Take the Overlook Trail via the Quarry Trail to reach this epic sunset view in Alabama. It’s just under three miles in length and rated very easy.  The trail has plenty of wildflowers, which adds a fun little color splash to an already beautiful view. Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve has some of the best dog-friendly trails in Alabama, so bring your pup along for the adventure!

3. Rosemary Dunes Trail

  • Location: Orange Beach, Alabama

Gulf State Park offers plenty of trails to explore, but catching the sunset along the Rosemary Dunes Trail is one of my favorites. The out-and-back trail is about four miles long and paved all the way.

4. Cotton Bayou, Rosemary Dunes, and Catman Loop

  • Location: Orange Beach, Alabama

Another wonderful sunset view at Gulf State Park. If you’re one who wants a serene sunset over water, take the Cotton Bayou, Rosemary Dunes, and Catman Loop. It’s a 5.3-mile loop that’s paved, and there are benches along the way to sit for a spell and take in the view.

5. Double Oak Lake Loop

  • Location: Pelham, Alabama

This slice of paradise in Oak Mountain State Park is one of those areas you’ll revisit again and again. The Double Oak Lake Loop is about four miles long and offers plenty of parking at the trailhead, plus bathrooms, too.

6. Kings Chair Loop

  • Location: Pelham, Alabama

If you’re up for more of a challenge, take the Kings Chair Loop at Oak Mountain State Park for an epic sunset view. The four-mile trail starts off steep, but it levels out to end at one of the most scenic overlooks in Alabama.
