7 Small Towns In Montana That Are Full Of Charm And Perfect For A Weekend Escape
Getting away from it all feels a little different when you live in the Last Best Place. We may require a change of scenery from time to time, but that doesn’t mean we want to leave Montana… in fact, the majority of us would prefer not to. But while most tourists tend to flock to Whitefish, Big Sky, and our other well-known cities, the locals can head to these seven spots for a quieter, more peaceful, but still amazing getaway.
Dillon is such an underrated little city. Situated in a sweeping valley not far from Bannack State Park, the city's downtown area will take you straight back to the gold rush days.
2. Red Lodge
Red Lodge is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, but the town itself also happens to be fantastic. The historic Pollard Hotel is a wonderful place to stay, and there are a surprising number of tasty restaurants here.
Located in Ravalli County about 26 miles from Missoula, Stevensville is one of those places you might forget about until you visit for the weekend... and then never want to leave. Not only is it the epitome of small-town living at its finest, it's home to the historic St. Mary's Mission, which was instrumental in the founding of our state.
4. Fort Benton
Speaking of the birthplace of Montana, why not spend a weekend exploring historic Fort Benton? There's an incredible amount of local history to be learned here, and the Grand Union Hotel (Montana's oldest operating hotel) is remarkable.
Livingston is a short drive from Bozeman, but you'll feel like you're in a different world. The downtown area is ridiculously charming, and the city serves as a great gateway to all kinds of outdoor recreation.
Eureka isn't typically the first place that comes to mind when we think of great local getaways, but this small town truly has a big heart. The hospitality, the charming main street, and Montana's highest-rated golf course will steal your heart.
7. Big Timber
Big Timber is a small town, but the area has a surprising amount of amenities. And considering it's surrounded by the beautiful Crazy Mountains, it's the perfect place to spend a weekend.
