Ivan Smith and his wife, Jean, opened the market after Ivan spent years managing Safeway stores across the state.
Ivan and Jean started small, delivering frozen seafood to a few restaurants in Montana in a rented Green Oldsmobile Station Wagon.

However, since this was Montana's first and only strictly seafood company, it gained in popularity very quickly.
Today, Seafoods of the World is operated by David, Ivan and Jean's son.
